3/21/05 Liberal Update, Q1 2005 Things have been fairly slow. Jobs are growing (Democrats predicted they would be lost under a Bush presidency). Unemployment remains low (they predicted it would rise). The Stock Market is holding its own (they predicted it would fall). Growth is good (they predicted it would lag), but inflation is low, and interest rates are still fairly low. Income tax cuts continue to benefit everyone who pays income taxes (they lied and said it only benefited the rich). We have the second African-American Secretary of State in history (Republicans 2, Democrats 0), and the first African-American woman (Republicans 1, Democrats 0). Overseas our foreign policy is making progress (they predicted it would not). Iraq is moving steadily toward a constitutional democracy (they predicted it would die a-borning). Syria is pulling out of Lebanon and suffering pressure, along with Iran, to cease funding terrorists (they predicted the situation with terrorism and the "axis of evil" would worsen). Lebanon may soon have its first truly democratic election in decades (they didn't predict that!). The autocratic government of Egypt is showing signs of loosening its grip (they didn't predict that!). I suppose it is fair to say that Republicans aren't very good at talking, because the Democrats seem to come pretty close to winning arguments about these issues. But Democrats aren't very good at doing, because the facts always come out on the other side. Hannity and McAuliffe, anyone? Modified: 03/23/2005 |
