5/15/04 Liberal Myths and Lies The chain of command, going all the way up to Bush and Rumsfeld, is responsible for the prison abuse in Iraq. This is already almost certainly not true. One of the involved soldiers has said that they did these things after hours, when they could get away with things that would have gotten them in trouble had they been detected (others deny this, of course, as part of their defense, which is empty due to the next point I will make here). More importantly, they took pornographic videos and photographs as an integral part of these activities, and it defies reason to suppose they had their superiors' authorization to do this, much less that their superiors ordered them to do it. This makes their claims that they were authorized to do other things that are on the same body of videos and photographs incredible. It appears to me they were planning to market their pornography and make a few bucks on the side (or they simply indulged their fantasies and impulses at the expense of the war effort). Iraq is Bush's Vietnam. All of Iraq is under our military control. This was never the case in Vietnam. We are suffering infinitesimal casualties compared to those we suffered in Vietnam. Our enemies have been routed and can only harass and annoy our troops (which is in warfare a deadly situation, of course), and inflict heaviest casualties on the citizens they want the world to believe they would like to liberate. The only similarity? That the bulk of the mainstream media and liberal establishment want us to believe we are losing, and exaggerate every bad turn of events while overlooking the strategic reality. So perhaps it is fair to say that Iraq is Teddy Kennedy's Vietnam, Dan Rather's Vietnam, and CNN's Vietnam. Nick Berg's murder can be laid at the feet of the Bush administration. The detention of Berg by the Iraqis was justified by his suspicious connections in the past. The offer of safe passage out of Iraq by the FBI was refused by Berg himself, absolving the administration of any degree of responsibility for his continued presence in a very dangerous place. The killers, and the killers alone, could have prevented his murder. Berg's father may have sympathy for them (for reasons perhaps we will never fully understand), but these are misplaced sympathies. Abu Musaad al-Zarqawi and his troglodyte thugs deserve nothing but suffering and death. Modified: 09/10/2004 |
